Leading aircraftsman Ted Collins was ordered to keep his wife Maureen’s picture hidden during duty hours at his base in Brentford England. The model’s measurements are 43 34 38, and authorities say the image could distract airmen from their work.
Oakland police search for a masked intruder who robbed John J. Reilly 72 and his wife at knife point after entering through doors left open during painting. The couple surrendered 46 dollars. the thief fled via a rear door. Reilly presides over Western Department Stores, including Kahn's in downtown Oakland.
LOS ANGELES Western Air Lines resumed service after a 74 day strike. An airline spokesman said more than 25,000 passengers had reservations since Monday when the company reopened its ticket office.
Mario P. Cortese 49 a San Leandro Morning News columnist was struck by a car at East 14th Street near 133rd Avenue and died at Fairmont Hospital three hours later. Driver Evert Pattison 29 Castro Valley said he was driving south when the collision occurred. Cortese who lived at 157 Castro Street San Leandro had worked for Transovean Airlines and previously ran a Honolulu restaurant. He died of a fractured skull at 5 40 am. The driver was not cited and police continued the investigation.

Paris dispatch reports French troops in Southern Tunisia killed more than 200 Arab guerrillas in the past two weeks. The fighting comes as the National Assembly votes a colonial reform program intended to stabilize Algeria and other French possessions amid rising tensions in North Africa.
Los Angeles Attorney General Edmund G. Brown urged changing California primary election law to shorten campaigning. He spoke before the Los Angeles Bar Association, proposing June primaries be moved to late August to reduce the interval between the primary and the November general election.
Sacramento home builders denied racial discrimination charges in federal court. Oliver Wing, Negro employee at McClellan Air Force Base, alleged city developers blocked him from buying a subdivision home. Court action centered on alleged real estate practices by local builders.
Southern Alameda officials hailed a compromise plan for a Southern Crossing linking the Eastbay to San Francisco. The Assembly Conservation and Planning committee approved the bill after a three hour fight, with a Lincoln amendment barring Northern California gas tax funds from used on approaches. Executives foreseen construction start in 1956 with bonds funding $180 million for the crossing and $120 million for approaches.
Hayward police questioned Marie Goveras after a fortune telling session in which she took five dollars from a patron. Officials say fortune telling is illegal in Hayward. Goveras, mother of a three month old, advertised in local papers and promised another reading later that day.

Ten were invited to a Moscow high energy physics conference in mid May, and ten to openings linked to unveiling a 10 billion volt super cyclotron. Britain confirmed a stand-by military plan for action in the Middle East in case of war and said Western powers would meet Arab or Israeli aggression with force. Foreign ministers of the Big Three will discuss Middle East plans in Paris next month.
Fifteen American tourists were aboard the Cairo to Aswan express when it derailed near Maghagha in Upper Egypt. Eight Egyptians died in the crash though none of the Americans were injured, according to the American Express Tourist Office in Cairo. The derailment was blamed on a soft roadbed causing the tracks to settle.
George M. Westeman, 46, of Los Angeles, fell from a Western Pacific freight train in Oakland. Thirty cars passed over him, severing both legs, and he died two and a half hours later at Highland Hospital.
A. O. Pimentel, named Hayward's oldest native at the 80th birthday celebration, died at his home 648 Second Street at age 86. Funeral at Sorensen Bros. chapel 2 pm tomorrow. interment Lane Tree cemetery. Survived by wife Hattie Merrill Pimentel, son Col Merrill A. Pimentel, three grandsons, two great grandchildren, two brothers, and other relatives. Born 1869 to Joseph and Rose Pimentel, his family helped found Hayward's early business and civic life including the town's first barber shop and mail delivery service. He retired in 1994 after a long career with Wells Fargo Express and the Great American Tea company, and remained active in church and fraternal orders. Continuous Hayward resident since youth, married Jan 14, 1955. celebrated 50th anniversary at the Presbyterian church.
Three major roasters cut wholesale coffee prices by three cents with expectations of follow on, but retailers claim the cut will not lower end prices. A San Francisco spice district source called the move folly, noting top wholesale this week was 1.02 and not reflected in stores as grocers hesitated to buy at the higher price.
