In Sacramento the Democratic State Central Committee denounced Nixon as repudiating the Republican Party by a slanted delegate slate. They endorsed Gov. Brown on opposing capital punishment and resisting narcotics action, calling for a liberal civil rights plank and criticizing Nixon aligned delegates.
Bridgeport file reports Polly Thomson, 75, longtime Helen Keller companion, died after a long illness. Thomson had lived with Keller at Keller's Easton home and accompanied Keller and Macy on early tours.
Chiang Kai-shek was reelected to a third six year term as Nationalist China president with 1,451 votes of 1,509 ballots. Vice President Chen Cheng also earned a second term unopposed. Inauguration is planned for May. The vote followed a suspension of term limits to secure continuity after the mainland recapture.

About 1,000 former Auschwitz Buna inmates and their spouses gathered in a Bronx hotel for a reunion. Survivors wore blue tattoo numbers on their forearms and shared photos of life as slave laborers. Organizers plan a scholarship fund for children of former inmates.
Washington AP reports the FAA set flight speed limits on Kheela turbo-prop Electras pending investigation of last Thursday's Tell City crash that killed 63. Limits cap speeds at about 316 mph up to 15,000 feet with lower speeds at higher altitudes. Northwest Airlines pledges to comply, though impact on flight schedules remains unclear.
Hollywood AP reports best selling author Tom T. Chamales died at 34 in a smoke-filled Hollywood apartment after a violent end to a stormy marriage. Five men described his asphyxiation while attempting to escape as police noted heart and shock. He faced charges of beating his wife Helen O Connell. He leaves two sons, Thomas and Gerald, from his first marriage.
