An 18 year old youth and his 16 year old companion face charges in two killings in Solano County. After stealing a car they chased a highway patrol roadblock, leading to the death of Patrolman Charles Sorenson and Deputy Hide Humphrey. SACRAMENTO AP As state lawmaker William Bagley R San Rafael proposed a bill to empower the California superintendent of public instruction to set school policy instead of the state Board of Education. The move comes amid a policy clash between state schools chief Max Rafferty and the board. Bagley argues for better administrative practice and says the current system ties the superintendent to the board. Rafferty contends the board holds the policy-making power. legal opinions have been sought to resolve the dispute.
Machinists in the San Francisco Bay Area have voted to strike if employers do not meet contract demands. The International Association of Machinists said 7,000 workers in 140 plants face contract expirations in April. The union seeks improved sick leave, vacations, health and welfare benefits, and about a 10 percent wage increase. A counteroffer from the California Metal Trades Association was noted as pending next week.
