UPI reports Gemini 8 astronauts Neil Armstrong and David Scott launched from Cape Kennedy atop a Titan rocket at 8 41 a m PST. They aim for a 107000 mile chase of the unmanned Agena target and dock in space.
Facts and figures on today's Gemini mission cap Cape Kennedy describe civilian Neil Armstrong and Air Force Maj David Scott preparing to attempt the first satellite docking. Armstrong reports "Looking good up here" as the complex launch proceeds with a planned space walk and multiple experiments.
President Johnson declared the United States will beat the Soviet Union to the moon and land a man there in the 1960s after viewing the Gemini launch. He spoke in Washington promising U S achievement amid the space race.
Katastrophe erupts in Watts as crowds clash with police injuring dozens and killing two. A white driver and a Black man die amid snipers, fires, and curbside clashes. Gov. Brown orders swift control while officers restore order and seal off streets.
Mayor Daniel E. Cooper denounces opponents as he blasts speeches criticizing the $600 monthly mayoral salary. The council voted 4 to 2 to approve the raise, effective May 1, with Vice Mayor John K. Smith and Vernon Blichfeldt voting against, and Arthur Phillips wavering after backing the measure.
Hayward Postmaster A J Foster faces a protest as Raymond K Foster, son of the postmaster, is named chief accountant. The unions accuse officials of violating a four year old pact barring promotions for the postmaster’s sons until the senior Foster retires. The dispute echoes a 1962 episode when three Foster sons were placed in supervisory roles.
In a Alameda County bribery case, defense attorney Herman Mintz challenged witness Earle Parrish, the suspended auditor appraiser, over document initials and alleged payoffs. Mintz pressed Parrish on his grand jury testimony and a $272,716 reduction claim tied to Kellogg plant machinery not depreciated from 1952 to 1963.
South County Junior College District trustees offered an extra 250000 to finance a 1000 seat auditorium at Chabot College Hayward on condition another agency matches the amount Hayward Area Recreation District already earmarked 340000 for the project Johnson says the low bid 1271000 exceeds estimates by about 452000 and could rise to 16 million overall the district may borrow up to 400000 more if needed with bids viewed as favorable by architect Delp W Johnson and contractor Lathrop Construction
The Hayward city council reaffirmed in principle support for a college community auditorium on the Chabot College campus while reopening the option for an auditorium in downtown Hayward. A resolution favored financing by South County Junior College District and the Hayward Area Recreation District. The council revived its auditorium committee and charged it to study the proposal further.
