A severe snowstorm grounded commutes as two MBTA trains collided near Boston. Injured passengers were rushed to area hospitals, including Massachusetts General, with more than 100 hurt. Witnesses described chaos as crowds helped one another.
Pickets halted first shift at the GM plant, later largely halted operations as union locals planned a meeting. Two union men were hospitalized after an incident with plant security. management urged workers to return. Five suspensions from the initial walkout lingered, including a crane operator who refused a bad die for shipment.
Trustees report alarm over BART trains passing near school properties on Ierson Street and near Sunset High School. Officials say trains travel about 51 miles per hour within 30 feet of classrooms and multi purpose rooms, prompting concerns about noise and safety for students at Hayward Bowman Hatcher and Cherryland elementary.
City beautification will be the top item at the Hayward Parks Commission meeting tomorrow at 8 p.m. at city hall. Staff and council reaffirm plans to apply for extra beautification funds under a federally sponsored program next year. Discussion will cover hours in city parks and recreation areas and Hayward Area Recreation District borrowing plans.

CincAGO based AFL CIO affiliated union leader Cogen says the American Federation of Teachers has never received CIA money and asks the National Education Association to assist in proving it. The NEA and other education groups have been named as CIA recipients in listings.
President Reagan detailed a tax plan and said public service must not be cut. He stressed rapid action on Lake Tahoe water purity, noting a predecessor party’s concerns. He plans Easter with in-laws in Arizona, then heads to Washington for a Gridiron Club appearance and talks with GOP lawmakers.

Emma Quaresma 64 remains in critical condition at Washington Hospital along with her husband J A Quaresma 60 and daughter Lynn 4 after a Sunday head on collision with Robert Bull driver of 434 Craycroft Fremont. Son Steve 13 and Cathryn Bull 7 suffered minor injuries. Quaresma, former Bank of Fremont president and long time Municipal Court judge, lives at 42124 Mission Blvd Fremont.
