Forty American prisoners of war shared memories of Vietnamese camps with hundreds of Clark Air Base school children. They received posters and cards from students, and Navy member Coker was moved to tears as the crowd sang the Star Spangled Banner and offered heartfelt thanks.
Hayward High School students were honored by Gov. Reagan and State Supt. Wilson Riles for a land-use study. The project was among 10 statewide winners chosen from over 400 entries by Riles's advisory committee. The Hayward work examined Ward Creek behind Memorial Park, linking wildlife, vegetation, and environmental factors, with findings favoring keeping Ward Creek in a natural state. Fremont students shared a similar honor for Stivers Lagoon Nature Center development in Central Park, with involvement from five high schools and multiple elementary schools.
Sarge the mail carrier's dog, part terrier and part Airedale, is back on the job with Mel Swan after a scare when the pound nabbed him. Rumors of being hit by a car were false. he spent a night in custody and was returned to his owner who often looks away as Sarge dashes off on routes. The dog is famed for keeping other dogs at bay.
Hayward school board defeated a proposal to abolish spanking by a 41 vote. Supt. Ray Arveson backed retaining the policy while expanding alternatives such as counseling and work duties. Board member Gregory Michesels cast the lone vote against abolishing corporal punishment, citing concerns over misinterpretation and child behavior.
County couples rush to obtain marriage licenses as rubella blood tests become mandatory at midnight. County Clerk Jack Blue notes possible delays if labs cannot perform the new test. a deferral bill may push the effective date to January 1, 1974. Health officials seek lab readiness and court waivers if needed.
