Purcell Given Five Years Probation in Hit and Run Case
Leo Purcell a 56 year old Alameda swimming star pleaded guilty to the hit and run death of Rev Ernest Potter Runnells 60 near Hayward last Oct 28. He received five years straight probation from Superior Court Judge Chris B Fox after admitting he drove the car that struck Runnells who was returning to his car from a flower stand. Purcell had settled $310000 with the widow, had no insurance and had a good report from the community. only overindulgence in alcohol was listed as a failing. He was warned to abstain from liquor and never drive without court permission. Any violation could bring a substantial jail term.
