Agents seize $1.75 million in heroin in Hayward raid

Federal, state and local officers raided six South County sites, arresting nine suspects including Umberto Chavez of Fremont and his accomplices. About 15 pounds of heroin were seized, the largest single haul in Northern California in 19 years, with the ring's Mexico supplier still at large.

Pressure for Army slots in Vietnam case widens probe

Former Army captain Thomas J. Whelan testifies to Senate investigators that demoted Brig. Gen. Bar I. Cole twice pressured him in 1967 to clear illegal importation of slot machines into Vietnam. Leandro Woman Rescued From Burning Home In South County Fire

A 73 year old San Leandro woman, Katherine Conlon, was rescued through a bedroom window by firemen amid three major South County fires yesterday. She suffered heat and smoke inhalation but was in satisfactory condition at Oak Knoll Hospital in Oakland. Neighbor William Henric helped police and linemen reach her, breaking the window, as firemen wore gas masks during the search and boost in a blaze causing about $20,000 in damage.
