Sacramento Gov. Brown signed an urgent measure allowing county Assessors to consider the previous session’s repeal of the state requirement for anti smog devices on used cars. Assemblyman Richard J. Donovan led the measure, which takes effect immediately to aid dealers with stocked anti smog parts.
The GOP denounced the $1.1 billion Appalachian development measure as a boondoggle and pushed a substitute adaptable to Appalachia and other distressed regions. If rejected, they will pursue amendments to trim key features. Democrats expect quick passage. Laird urged a minority voice to oppose federal excess and warn against a Great Society debt.
Michael L. Raikas aged 21 of 570 B Street Hayward remained under observation at San Francisco General Hospital after being brought in following an attempted self harm at an unspecified location late at night.
A driver, Donald Chaney, 40, Fremont, crashed into a 12,000-volt pole, knocking out power for about four hundred customers in Fremont Union City and South Hayward for 49 minutes. Raikas dangled 242 feet above the water but clung to a scaffold and survived as a patrolman tried to coax him back. Chaney received minor injuries and was treated at Washington Township Hospital.
San Leandro police report an AC Transit bus driver William A. Neubert 34 Fremont was robbed of 10 dollars by two youths aged about 12 and 13. The pair boarded at 25th Avenue Oakland, rode to Ban croft and E 4th Street San Leandro, talked about bus schedules then fled with the driver’s quarters after dismounting on E 4th Street.
