Leased rail crossing plan eyed for Washington Avenue
SAN LEANDRO The city mailed to the State Public Utilities Commission a request for two one way at grade crossings on the Western Pacific railroad tracks on Washington Avenue. Initiated by Associated Homeowners the plan calls for one east side lane and no south bound lane on the west side of the underpass. Estimated cost about 150000. Public Works Director Richard Ward says the city plus 49 would widen the underpass but financing not expected until 1978 79. The plan aims to ease heavy traffic and the commission is asked for comments before a detailed study. Chores for commission remain uncertain as the commission has turned down a five lane plan on the east side of the underpass.

City Wins Long War Over Rail Crossing
The city prevailed after a protracted dispute with Southern Pacific Railroad over a Farallon Drive air or grade crossing. The PUC denied the railroad’s rehearing request, allowing the city’s plan to proceed to ease traffic flow in the industrial area and congested Bonaire and Washington Manor neighborhoods. The decision, endorsed by most commissioners, ends months of appeals and signals possible court action by the railroad if pursued.
