Peacetime Public Works Interstate Highway System Half Done
Washington AP reports the Interstate and Defense Highways system aims for 41,000 miles with 21,500 miles open. It touts faster travel, scenic routes, fewer billboards, and threefold safety gains if not overdriven. Toll roads exist on about 2,000 miles, with 1,328 1/2 miles without traffic lights on the current map. The AAA notes East coast progress uneven, Seattle to San Francisco limited, and Boston to St. Louis still developing amid a $25 billion toll-free funding share.
