Nixon proposed war compromise to end Cambodia bombing
President Nixon floated a four point compromise to extend bombing of Cambodia for six weeks and seek a congressional decision by Aug. 15. House Republicans led by Gerald Ford urged approval to avert a constitutional showdown over funding as Congress labors to avert a shutdown with the new fiscal year starting Sunday. Ford cited an unnamed White House contact, believed to be Melvin Laird, saying Nixon would accept Aug. 15 as the cutoff unless military actions require further review. Critics warned the move could be surrender to the president while lawmakers pressed antiwar amendments on funding bills amid looming deadlines.

Reagan veto Passage of remapping bill urged
An attorney for most Culburnin congressmen urged adopting the congressional reapportionment plan vetoed by Gov. Reagan. Frank Rothman of Los Angeles told special masters reviewing state reapportionment plans that the plan has broad support, minimizes charges of discrimination, and has passed at least one test. He noted the governor vetoed the plan as a single bill and would have signed separate Senate maps, while masters scheduled an additional hearing in San Francisco on July 6 to hear testimony from lawmakers.

Dumbarton Bridge study hints traffic shift and growth
A Dumbarton Bridge study from Palo Alto and Menlo Park analyzes two feeder-system options to keep Willow Road traffic near current levels through 1997. The dual feeder plan uses Marsh Road, Mento Park, and Willow Road to route traffic, while the four-feeder plan adds University Avenue and Windward/Oregon Expressways to widen access. Water pollution would see minor increases during dredging. overall air and noise impacts include higher noise near schools and residential areas, with barriers proposed. The report predicts urban development may accelerate in South County and the West Bay residents may relocate to the East Bay, while accident rates may drop similarly to past toll bridges once completed.
