Sacramento Dr. Malcolm H. Merrill state health director said 43 California counties will have completed polio inoculations for first and second graders by week’s end. He noted polio cases through June 15 totaled 228, down from 407 in 1954 and 920 in 1953, with paralytic cases at a similar ratio to recent years. About 38 percent of eligible first and second graders had parental consented inoculations so far. Merrill added that vaccine distribution priority is to finish the first and second grade program, though school vacations may hinder progress.
