Alameda County Sheriff Tom Houchins attacked Supervisor Bates and others opposing new jails yesterday in a letter to the press. He said Hayward residents and council did not speak for the majority of the city, which opposes the proposed 300 to 500 bed pretrial jail. A California Highway Patrol helicopter exploded and crashed in Warm Springs near Fremont injuring no one else. Pilot Frederick M. W. Enright, 30, and observer Adolphe Hernandez, 44, both of San Jose, died. Witnesses described a steep dive and a flash near the railroad area as the craft disintegrated after colliding with a tower and shortly after.

Police aides will report visible drugs, risking arrests, while ambulances must still provide emergency medical care. City officials warn the change could reduce ambulance coverage and increase likely fatalities.
Five pro golfers including Lee Trevino and Jerry Heard were struck by lightning at Butler National Golf Course during the Wester Open. Trevino and Heard were kept overnight for observation.
