Fight Seen On Fortas Nomination
Washington reports a partisan clash over President Johnson’s picks Abel Fortas for chief justice and Homer Thornberry for the bench. Senate Republicans oppose, threatening a filibuster as Southern Democrats hedge statements while the chamber races to adjourn before early August. Fortas and Thornberry face scrutiny over civil rights rulings and other opinions, with potential for a lengthy confirmation battle.

Berkeley Mayor Blames BART Fee Overruns
Berkeley Mayor Wallace Johnson charged Bay Area Rapid Transit engineers with causing about 100 million in extra construction costs. Johnson, a BART director, called the claim a myth and blamed underestimates or over design by Parsons Brinckerhoff-Tudor-Bechtel. Bechtel VP Kiely defended the projection as accurate within a small margin. Johnson pressed for a 10 percent fee reduction by the full BART board.
