Berkeley Budget Clash Sparks Fight Over Crime Tools
Alameda County supervisors sparred over a request heavy with policy implications as the district attorney sought more personnel to combat narcotics and crime routes. A sheriff request for 28 000 in uniform allowances and 27 942 to expand crime laboratory operations was discussed but not approved, though funds stayed in the budget. Public defender and welfare department requests, including 15 521 for an assistant and office equipment, were denied. Despite rejected items, total requests neared 100 000 with several welfare initiatives debated. Supervisors did approve 80 000 to establish a fund stamp program, projected to cost about 119 001 for a year, not in effect for four months. The final budget review continues Thursday and may extend into Friday.
