12 Year Old Miner Hired for Brains Then Becomes Clergyman
A fragmented historical piece recalls John Thompson, aged 12, who worked in a English coal mine. He quipped about horses pulling coal cars, enraging a supervisor who later hired him for his intelligence. He later attended night school, won a scholarship to Oxford, moved to America, became a clergyman in Chicago, and helped fund a tall Chicago temple. The tale frames child labor, reform, and inspiration from a mineyard to a famous church.
