San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto was elected president of the U S Conference of Mayors succeeding Norfolk Mayor Roy B. Martin Jr. Moon Landrieu Newark Mayor Kenneth Gibson and New Orleans Mayor Moon Landrieu named vice president and chairman respectively. The group urged Congress to renew general revenue sharing and pass housing and transit bills while pressing the federal budget to curb inflation. Dallas Mayor Wes Wise led a coalition opposing a bigger share for cities with greater need under the current population formula.
The UPI report notes U.S. mayors at their annual meeting urged Congress and the President to shift nonessential military spending to revenue sharing to aid city budgets hit by inflation. They called for re-enactment of the program set to expire in 1976, while offering no definition of adequate defense or domestic needs.
Concord NH July 12 UPI New Hampshire and Maine officials vote to approve a boundary compromise for 2400 disputed acres of lobster rich waters.
