Lady Audrey Campbell, widow of a British diplomat, has studied the harem life in Turkey. She says the reality mixed boredom intrigue fantasy and murder, not a nonstop orgy. She recalls women freed from the last sultan’s harem in 1909 and has lived here for two years, challenging popular opinion.
Lady Campbell recounts the harem system under various sultans with hundreds of women in confining quarters. The chosen girl served the sultan, sometimes bearing children, while rivals and royal conduct shaped status, power, and survival until 1909 when harems were opened.
Anne Foro reports Jo Ferro daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Ferro left New York by air Saturday for Europe. She will tour 10 countries then study Spanish and literature at the University of Barcelona during the summer session. Afterward she will visit her sister Mrs Robert Simon in New York before returning to the Bay Area. She attends San Jose State College as a merchandising major and plans to graduate in January. The family home is 4 Via Hermosa San Lorenzo.
