Leandro Budget Action Tonight
The San Leandro City Council will study the 1956 37 municipal budget of just over 2 million dollars tonight in City Hall. Officials hope for approval but some council members want more time. The budget increases nearly a quarter million dollars with a proposed five cent per 100 assessed valuation tax cut. The city’s assessed valuation is about 83 million dollars and taxes have been cut for eight consecutive years. Local critics include the Alameda County Taxpayers Association the Chamber of Commerce and the San Leandro Manufacturers Association. The chamber cites concerns over 70 000 for a swimming pool project and 40 000 for park site acquisition while noting recreation funds are endorsed in principle. If capital improvements are not clearly itemized funds may be surplus and used for tax relief.
