Plea for music funds turned down by council
Newark city council balked at a 300 subsidy request from the Philharmonic Society of Fremont Newark. Mayor Harry Lewis, Councilmen Balentine and Ellis Baker opposed the grant citing tax pressures, while Robert Plowright and George Kincaid supported funding. Philarmonic President Shirley Sisk urged the city to back the arts as a community asset, noting many local musicians are Newark residents and emphasizing the program’s value beyond tuition and school concerts.
