Image tubes may boost telescope power to match 30-inch scope
Dr. Gerald E. Kron of UC Lick Observatory reported at the Pacific Society meeting in San Francisco that image tubes with cesium surfaces could equal optical telescopes in observing power, potentially up to 24 times. Kron noted current tubes are flawed and hard to use, while UC astronomer aims to develop a high vacuum, contamination free tube with removable films and a larger inch field to cover the telescope’s prime focus.
