A coastal fog layer extends inland in the early morning followed by a cooler day with westerly winds of 12 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Yesterday's high reached 72 degrees. Today remains mostly fair with clear skies, tonight should stay calm.
The United Steelworkers and U S Steel resumed wage negotiations as the union readies for a possible strike by 600000 steel workers. McDonald and Stephens chaired talks after rejecting an initial offer as insufficient, with weekend conferences planned to avert a crisis in 1955 contract talks. Notices were sent to locals urging strike preparation while wage policy committee set for Monday meeting.
A San Leandro dentist of Japanese descent says 32 residents signed a letter urging him not to move into a new home near Cherry Grove Park. The letter claims to welcome one nonwhite family but opposes the Aikawa family, citing fears of a nonwhite block and urging sellers and agents to back out. The case follows a prior threat to another San Leandro home buyer three months earlier. Dr. Satoru Aikawa, his wife and three children, reside in Alameda, and he vows to continue the search for a home, possibly outside San Leandro.
President Juan Peron plans a cabinet reshuffle naming a new Minister of Interior to lead the federal police. Observers expect changes in interior aviation education and agriculture ministries while many ministers resign to allow a freer reorganization. Peron meets political and military leaders at his Palermo home after last week’s rebel assault on the government house. General Lucero, leader of the repression forces, is among the first to confer with Peron as talks continue.
Sacramento Californians will pay 20 to 34 cents more per bottle for liquor starting July 1 the Alcoholic Beverage Control department revealed. Deputy director Malcolm Harris said distillers filed new price lists with average increases about 22 to 23 cents per fifth while the state tax boost is 14 cents per bottle. The tax gained by Gov Knight totals 70 cents per gallon and distillers will use the period to adjust price lists to stay competitive.
Republican leader William F Knowland termed the Bering Sea attack on a U S Navy Neptune bomber deliberate, noting suspicious coincidences with other Soviet actions while the White House and State Department awaited Moscow’s explanation. Senators Hickenlooper Mansfield and Marsfield urged strong protest and reparations but cautioned against derailing the big four conference while monitoring Russian responsibility.
In San Francisco Molotov promised Secretary Dulles a prompt explanation on the Soviet MIG downing of a U S Navy patrol aircraft after he received Kremlin information. He spoke at an unrehearsed briefing as East West tensions rose over the Bering Strait incident and Geneva summit previews emerged from the UN anniversary assembly.
India’s Red Cross seeks U S permission to act as intermediary for returning five former prisoners from Red China. Three Americans Lewie Grigg Otho Bell William Cowart and two Belgians Louis Verdyck Roger Devriendt would be handed to Indian authorities for repatriation once U S approval is obtained. Peiping radio said the five would depart China after exit formalities.
Carpenters in Alameda county cast ballots today on a proposed contract from building trades employers offering a 12 percent hourly wage raise and benefits. Voting started at the new union hall of Enter's Local 1622 on Mattox. Other locals in Alameda, San Mateo, San Francisco and Marin counties will vote through July 6, per the Bay Counties District Council of Carpenters.
A brisk wind swept San Francisco as delegates and dignitaries ascended to the War Memorial Opera House to hear private citizen Harry S Truman speak at the UN's 10th anniversary. Joined by Dag Hammarskjold and Elco van Kleffens, Truman noted he was a private citizen and received a standing ovation from the audience including the Russian delegation.
