San Lorenzo prepares to vote on incorporation with 9179 registered voters ahead of polls from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters will decide city status and select five of ten candidates for the new 4 council. The outcome will shape governance for a community of about 27,000 under county or city authority.
A Pacific Western Airlines DC-3 crashed after takeoff at Port Hardy B C killing 14 with only four survivors. A second airliner made a forced belly landing in Minneapolis with no injuries. A light plane crash near Hardingerburg Kentucky killed three aboard. One survivor, stewardess Pat Wilson, aided others despite injuries. Three Illinois men died in a separate light-plane crash near Pekin Wisconsin. A crippled North Central Airlines DC-3 landed wheels-up in Minneapolis with seven passengers and three crew uninjured.
A Sacramento teenager was crowned Miss California 1957 at the state pageant in Santa Cruz. Lorna Myrtle Anderson, 19, edged 40,000 spectators and will represent California at Miss America in Atlantic City. Finalist Kitty May Smith of Castro Valley was also named among the top contestants.
Tomorrow’s fair lists a Livermore Day judging at 6 30 a m with sheep breeds at 9 and gates opening at 10. Community Hour runs at 2 and 6 30 p m in Court 2 with a 4 p m 4 H cooking demonstration in Exhibition Hall and several Fun Unlimited reviews. Admission is free and about 10 000 parking spaces are available at 275 cents per car.
Northern Californians fled record heat with Pleasanton hosting the Alameda County Fair drawing an estimated 60 70 000 attendees. Samuel J. Whiting cites 75 000 on Saturday and a $477 000 pari mutuel total, while Hayward Plunge drew 2700 cooling visitors. San Francisco saw 76, Fleishacker Pool set a five year attendance high with about 7000.
The Army plans to reduce the August draft by 2000 men and asks the Selective Service System to induct 11,000 draftees. Through March the monthly quota stood at 13,000, with February 14,000 and January 17,000 inducted.
In San Francisco a merchant marine chief engineer, George F. Brandau, 32, was pistol whipped and robbed of 600 dollars after two bandits broke into his flat at noon. He said the men knew he had just returned from a voyage with wages. They bound and gagged him, took 560 from his coat and 40 from his wallet.
Jets for Korea halted as U S armed forces began transferring modern F 100 jets from Japan to Korea to enforce UN disarmament aims. American atomic capable jet fighters were delayed indefinitely amid political factors with L L Lemnitzer arriving to coordinate arms needs for allied Korea defenses as 13 Russian MIGs conducted a high altitude show over the Red zone.
George H. Hendricks a 42 year old welder from Concord Avenue was arrested on a drunkenness charge after causing a disturbance at Carbar 509 Main Street. Four hours later Patrolman John Zawodniak found him suspended by a belt in his jail cell around 4 45 am. Hendricks reportedly talked to himself saying he would not be taken out alive. His wife Madeline said he left home after 6 pm Saturday to fetch truck parts and had no known illness or financial trouble.
Frank Brewster was reappointed by Teamsters chief Dave Beck as chairman of the union’s 11-state Western Conference. Beck, absent, named Brewster to the post amid reform talk that he might be elected rather than appointed. Brewster faces a Washington contempt verdict for defying a Senate subcommittee.
Washington officials predict a ninth straight rise in the consumer price index with May figures due tomorrow. The index, up to 119.3 in April, signals continued inflation this year though not as rapid as in late 1956, with food costs lifting the index through July due to seasonal meat fruit and vegetable price increases.
SUEZ Egypt two Soviet destroyers entered the Suez Canal last night with uncertainty today whether they had left the waterway. The ships, claimed en route to Vladivostok in the Indian Ocean, were joined by an escort tanker into the canal’s northern Port Said end. Reports say they surfaced with the overnight southbound convoy in darkness and steamed into the Red Sea.
Senate leader Knowland predicted the house passed Civil Rights Bill would be called up for a July 8 debate, likely triggering a full filibuster. Senate Democratic Leader Johnson previously said it would not be called before July 8, as Knowland planned a prolonged talkathon by Southern senators.
Informants reported at least eight people killed and 22 wounded in 24 hours of renewed guerrilla attacks across Algeria. French officials said two battles near Honaine and Tlemcen left 44 rebels dead, with casualties for French forces not stated.

London reports Britons laughed at Betty Garrett a fish chop worker who outwitted top designers at Ascot selecting her as best dressed woman. Her navy suit imitation pearls 25 cents shoes 10 dollars and white handbag 2 dollars highlighted a televised prize.
