State plan cuts county car thefts in Alameda County
Alameda County saw a drastic drop in vehicle thefts and higher recoveries due to state financed crackdown. The Vehicle Theft Control Project received 375 087 from the California Council on Criminal Justice, cutting theft rates and raising recoveries countywide. In early 1974 Hayward showed a local theft issue with motorcycles inflating the failure rate, while Oakland reported higher theft totals but solid recovery figures. The county task force includes Oakland, the sheriff, Hayward, BART, and UC Berkeley, coordinating efforts for a county wide approach.
