Garden City Iowa AP reports nine state troopers and planes chasing suspects after a bank robbery attempt in Garden City a town of about 285. A nurse and two others tried the bank doors amid curious residents as authorities chased the scene and warned the public.
A master plan for the UW Alameda County Government Center calls for five new structures at the southwest corner of Winton Avenue and Amador Street, including four 300- to 300-bed jail blocks at an estimated 43 million dollars. The four-stage development spans about 10 years with a hall of justice in stage one housing up to seven courts and related offices, plus a law library, parking, and a central plaza.
Keitj Jones reports that Marc D Estout, curator of Olive Hyde Art Center in Mission San Jose, resigns amid controversy over exhibits including nudes and avant garde art. City officials favor a conservative role for the gallery, clashing with D Estout's broader aims and vision.
An Alameda County Superior Court jury set Citizens Utilities value at 3,941,487 but the ACWD with only 15 million authorized cannot meet the price. The jury also awarded Citizens 4.20 in damages and found duplicating services into Citizens’ area. Judge Sparrow refused to adjust the verdict. ACWD planned an appeal if price remained high. Trial focused on value of the Citizens water system serving about 13,000 in Niles and Decato.
New York stocks rose sharply in heavy Friday trading with the Dow up 10.09 to 855.44 after reaching a May high. The S P index gained 0.58 to 926.1 as volume surged to 26.26 million shares. The advance followed inflation data and upbeat economic reports boosting confidence in a recovery.
A district wide study in Fremont weighs abandoning or consolidating some of its 31 elementary schools. The tentative review, led by consultant Barney Rhos and Associate Superintendent Phil Bram, considers enrollment areas and may remove Oliwas and other schools from the list as cases change.
Brown says state should follow mandate to build the Dumbarton Bridge and has not stated a position on putting the issue to a public vote. Evanhoe, aide to Transportation Secretary Donald Burns, notes the governor has not voiced an opinion on Vasconcelos bill but may oppose it. The administration shows support for a Vasconcelos proposal to allow voter decision amid cost shifts from 40 million to over 90 million.
