House panel slashes HEW education funds in budget cuts
The House Appropriations Committee trimmed 347.8 million from Health, Education and Welfare estimates while granting 14.38 billion. It approved 1321 billion for elementary and secondary schools, a 200 million cut from requests and 356.15 billion less than this year's appropriation. The panel cited transfers and authorizing legislation expirations, noting a 186.1 million meaningful reduction below current obligations. A 28.28 million cut to school assistance in hard-hit areas leaves 382.09 million, with reserves intended to cushion impact. The larger budget combines HEW and related expenses, totaling 1.75 billion in cuts aimed at trimming next year’s outlays by 450 million.
