SAN FRANCISCO AP Meyerson acting chancellor at the University of California Berkeley will remain in office at least another month. His term would have expired in June, but UC President Kerr announced Meyerson will stay through July. Regents consider an ongoing review and other officials report no final decision yet.
President Johnson said he will sign the excise tax repeal bill Monday after clearing inventories, with benefits to flow to consumers, producers and retailers the next day. The 4.6 billion yearly repeal wipes out levies on many products, aiming for lower prices and increased purchasing power.
Kansas State Sen. Tom Van Sickle, aligned with Barry Goldwater, was elected national chairman of the Young Republicans in Miami Beach. He defeated David Fleherty of North Carolina. Helene Dover of Florida was elected cochairman, Miss Margo Bhut of Oregon was secretary, and John McDonald of Tennessee was treasurer.
Colorado bears the brunt as floods from cloudburst rivers ravage vast areas in the Rocky Mountain states and Southwest. Seventeen deaths are confirmed with at least one more missing in Colorado. In Lamar, five Guajardo family members were swept away. 96 year old Guajardo reportedly the sole survivor. In La Junta, 1500 residents received emergency evacuations as the Arkansas River floods the town. Las Animas braces as Arkansas and Purgatoire rivers threaten further inundation. Authorities report rising river levels and possible worst is ahead.
UC President Kerr told reporters there are no Communists employed at the university. He questioned the Senate Factfinding Committee on Un-American Activities report, saying accuracy could be improved and that no regents policy was violated. Kerr defended open forum policy and free speech on campuses.
The Alecr bill executive committee battles Oakland Council action on withdrawing from ABAG. Oakland faces potential loss of regional planning status and a $32,000 federal open space grant, with ABAG members aiming to persuade the council to remain in the Bay Area association. Newell B. Case may be sent to advocate Oakland’s continued membership.
Two grass fires within 20 minutes, four blocks apart, sparked arson suspicions. The first blaze near Fairview Wire Dept at 6:40 am was reportedly set, with teens seen fleeing a car. A second fire at 1419 Clay St occurred moments later. no structural damage occurred.
