Project director Mosemarie Callers said all the federally funded clerical gardening child care and hospital assistant positions would be filled by day’s end. Four hundred of the original five hundred eighty openings had already been filled before today.
The Supreme Court rules minimum fee schedules set by bar associations violate federal antitrust law when they affect interstate commerce. Alameda County lawyers note local fees vary, with some charging more and others less to attract clients. The decision signals an end to fixed fees outside local practice and could shift price fixing scrutiny to professional services.
Vice President Rockefeller and Senator Goldwater say CIA actions had presidential approval, but specifics remain secret. Rockefeller cites dead witnesses as hampering proof of Kennedy family involvement. Goldwater says major actions likely known to the President, but no firm evidence of assassination plots is found. Time and Tribune reports add alleged plots against Castro and De Gaulle.
CHICAGO UPI Acupuncture provides temporary relief of chronic pain in some patients but shows little promise for long term relief. A University of Florida study of 261 patients across 97 treatments found initial relief but follow up showed only 5 percent with little or no reduction, 17 percent with 50 percent pain relief and 18 percent with at least 35 percent relief.
A UPI report cites JAMA finding that overconcentrated evaporated milk can injure infants. It details a 7 week old girl who lost both legs below the knee from gangrene after being fed undiluted milk, treated in Roosevelt Hospital New York for bronchopneumonia.
The California Public Utilities Commission released a priority list for highway railroad overpasses funding. No South County projects are in the top seven. a new list is due by July 1 next year, so South County projects unlikely to receive state funds then. Three Hayward projects totaling 10.5 million failed to qualify. An 85 million railroad grade separation on Davis Street in San Leandro ranked ninth. A public hearing is set for tomorrow at 7 p.m. at San Leandro City Hall to review routes. City Manager Wesley McClure and Vice Mayor Mario Polvorosa commented on the process and the chance to influence next year’s ranking.
