Police Shootout Ends Hostage Siege After Fatal Slaying
A gunman Ernest Silas, 33, fatally shot a police sergeant and a four year old girl amid a dawn prowler call near UC campus. Brezhnev and Nixon Prepare for Washington Summit
Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev flies to the United States for a seven day summit with President Nixon. The talks at Camp David and the White House aim to deepen US Soviet cooperation in trade and diplomacy with officials noting no public claims of concessions and a focus on confidential negotiations. Brezhnev waves to colleagues, travels with aid personnel, and avoids public fanfare despite the transit through Keflavik and Gander. The visit follows Brezhnev’s prior Western trips and precedes formal talks at the White House and Camp David.
