The British submarine Sidon exploded in Portland harbor killing 13 crewmen and injuring seven others. The blast ripped open the 217 foot craft in the torpedo compartment while docked alongside a supply ship. An admiralty spokesman said there is no hope of saving the 13.
A Pan-Air Brazil flight from Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires crashed near Asuncion at 1:15 am. Fourteen of 21 aboard were killed, five passengers and two crew survived and were hospitalized. Notable passenger John Dowling of Time magazine was aboard. the plane was destroyed near Villa Elisa.
SAN JOSE police investigate the death of Rinaldi 31 a former house mother at San Jose State College found garrotted in her basement last night. Authorities seek her estranged husband Joseph for questioning after neighbors saw them leave the house yesterday afternoon. The body was discovered about 9 p.m. by her daughter Barbara Thrift following a dinner invitation to six college girls. The murder weapon was a length of cotton cord tied around the throat.
Berkeley resident Williet Wheat, 31, charged with the murder of Reno restaurant owner Lee Madsen, 46, after a hitchhiking dispute last June 9. Sheriff Johnson says pleading likely next week. W A Carver of Truckee appointed to defend Wheat at arraignment.
In San Francisco, many auto repair shops are expected to stay closed in retaliation for a machinists strike against three employer association members. A management spokesman said new and used car salesrooms will operate normally, but repair shops will be closed. Amos Crowl, manager of the Car Dealers association, stated that all mechanics at member firms will be laid off, while other staff may work, and salesrooms will open as usual.

A 62 year old truck driver, Leo J. Murphy, was killed when a Southern Pacific freight train struck his semi trailer near Hall station on Highway 17 in Washington township. The engineer said the engine struck the rear of the truck as it lay trapped under the train. Police could not confirm why the truck entered the track area. The wreck damaged a trestle and severed telephone lines, delaying traffic for over 22 hours while crews freed the truck. The disaster followed a prior fatal auto train collision nearby and occurred amid a spate of deadly crashes in the area.

A revolt against President Juan D. Peron erupted in Buenos Aires with military aircraft bombing the government palace at Plaza de Mayo and machine gun fire in the square.
