Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy conceded today that he erred in his prior testimony regarding Pvt. G. David Schine's application for a direct command role. The disclosure came during continued dispute coverage of the Army-McCarthy hearings in Washington.
United Nations hearings in New York saw Ambassador Tingfu Tsiang claim Chinese Communists have established a Red puppet regime on Thailand’s border inside Red China. Thailand urged a neutral U N military mission to protect security amid Viet Minh attacks. U S ambassador Lodge supported the move though Soviet veto looms. Ashland Area chamber of commerce abandons neutrality at a board meeting. Directors unanimously overruled the executive committee and kept a prior position opposing annexation to San Leandro. A protest letter from the Hayward Recreation and district groups will be sent to the county board of supervisors.
Newark Kiwanis club honored Don Diaz a Washington Union High School graduating senior with the Kiwanis agricultural achievement award for four years of agricultural work. Diaz raised chickens and rabbits on his farm and ran a Newark pet shop acting as a clearing house for his animals.
Secret testimony reveals Atomic Scientist J Robert Oppenheimer falsified a story for Army agents while earning high marks for loyalty. Edward Teller claimed Oppenheimer’s stance slowed the H bomb, and Oppenheimer admitted the lie was to a Soviet intermediary via Haakon Chevalier.
