Castro Valley board moves to acquire land between Stanton Avenue and Lake Chabot Road above Castro Valley Boulevard for a new Eden township 118 bed hospital. Negotiator Gerald Worthley hired at five dollars per hour to interface with property owners, with soil testing by Dames and Moore capped at 500. The board will meet Monday at the city district headquarters to discuss sewer facilities and board elections.

Key System Strike Averted By Union Contract OK

Carmen votes to accept a wage package averting a threatened strike against the Key System. The pact, retroactive to June 1, increases pay about 42 cents an hour plus pensions medical benefits and other improvements estimated at 24 cents. The agreement covers Key System trains and buses serving Oakland Berkeley San Leandro Hayward and nearby communities.

Sailor Seriously Hurt in Twin Vehicle Wreck Near Simla

W. Jeffries, 2604 Mare Island, a sailor, was seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision about half a mile west of Simla on the way to Vallejo. Jeffries’ car rear end and front were damaged after being struck following a stop, and another vehicle driven by W. D. Kildoy Jr. struck in an attempted pass. He was taken to St. Paul’s hospital in Livermore then moved to Oak Knoll naval hospital for neck and back injuries and shock. his 1950 model car was completely demolished.

Bridges Is Stripped of American Citizenship

Four- Judge George B. Harris today voided Harry Bridges's United States citizenship after his perjury and conspiracy convictions about lying on a naturalization hearing in 1945. Bridges, leader of the CIO International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union, faces a five-year prison sentence on appeal. Two Bridges lieutenants, Henry Schmidt and J R B Robertson, were also convicted and sentenced to two years each.

Spy Ring Slack Denies He Ever Was Communist

Alfred Dean Slack, 44, a chemist earning $78 weekly, is jailed on $100,000 bond as the alleged second American member of a wartime Russian spy ring. FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover linked Slack with Harry Gold and two Russians who fled, claiming Slack passed data on a powerful new explosive to Gold. Slack denied Communist ties, said the charges stem from a past incident, and claimed the arrest was a mistake. He was arrested as he arrived at Sundure Print Co. for work. his car and lunch box were left in the lot. Slack previously supervised at Holston Ordnance Depot in 1944.

War Veteran Enmeshed in Spy Ring

NEW YORK UP The arrest of David Greenglass 38 a war veteran and technical sergeant at Los Alamos was announced on spy charges for conspiring to give atomic bomb secrets to Russia. He allegedly passed secret papers and diagrams to Harry Gold in 1945 while working on highly confidential matters at the bomb plant. Bond was set at 100000 before his transfer to New Mexico pending formal charges and further questioning.
