Crews Rescue Stranded Salmon Across Drying Streams
Department of Fish and Game crews rescued thousands of young salmon and steelhead fingerlings stranded in drying streams during downstream migration last month. Rescues, often exceeding a million fingerlings, will be stepped up as streams dry or fall too low for migration. The largest effort was in Wvas Creek Santa Clara County, a Pajaro River tributary, with over 190000 steelhead fingerlings rescued and released. Nearby, Toomes and Dye creeks Tehama County yielded 80000 king salmon fingerlings released into the Sacramento River.
