Fugitive Ray Tracked by Bloodhounds After Prison Escape

Exhausted fugitive James Earl Ray failed to outrun bloodhounds named Sandy and Little Red after escaping from Cumberland Mountain prison. The hunt spanned about 50 hours and covered woodland, water, and rough terrain as Ray, aged 30s, was pursued by officers and dogs near Devonia and along a power line clearing before fatigue slowed him further.

Carter identifies five top candidates for FBI helm

President Carter named five leading contenders to head the FBI, including Sheriff William Lucas of Wayne County Michigan and Los Angeles District Attorney John Van De Camp. The list also includes Judge Hartington A Wood of Chicago, Justice John J Urwin Jr of Massachusetts, and Neil John Welch, head of the FBI Philadelphia office. Carter said the five are superbly qualified and will undergo further background checks by Attorney General Griffin Bell. Sunol Glen faces shrinking enrollment and age 8 classrooms
