Library expansion plan gets boost for Hayward project
Two moves this week push a $1 million three level library expansion on Mission Boulevard and C Street toward reality. The House extended federal revenue sharing for four years, and Hayward City Council endorsed spending about $1 billion of anticipated funds on the library project. If funding remains near current levels, the expansion could be paid in about two and a half years, with architect selection and detailed planning to follow. The present 25 year old library, expanded 9,000 square feet 18 years ago, serves a city of about 14,246 residents.

Deer thieves threaten his berry crop near Fremont
George Kato, owner of a Fremont produce stand, says gangs of deer from nearby hills raid his 10 acres of strawberries east of Central Park, eating up to 200 crates in one night and costing about 500 dollars. He fences the field with metal pegs and chicken wire but the deer jump, crawl, or break through. He has tried repellents and even exploding firecrackers and iron manure from Marineworld in a bid to deter them.

Family of slain coed files lawsuit in Alameda County
The family of Debra Ann Rebiejo, a 21 year old San Lorenzo student murdered after being kidnapped and raped near Chabot College, sues five defendants including the California Adult Authority Calvary Baptist Church and a gunshop owner for negligence in releasing and supervising James Reece. The suit seeks unspecified damages. Reece was sentenced to death after being found guilty of first degree murder robbery kidnapping and rape.
