Food stamp plan to aid Alameda County families
Leona Ward reports Alameda County begins July 1 in a federal food stamp program. About 4,450 welfare families plus 175 with marginal income have applied. 2,225 certified so far. The program uses orange and blue stamps to swap for food, with eligibility tied to net income and local welfare calculations. Banks, grocers, and county officials coordinate, aiming to reach 5,000 to 7,000 participants by year end, with penalties for misuse and strict nonfood item restrictions.
