The Senate Appropriations Committee favorable on a public works bill allocating 164,000 for San Lorenzo Creek flood control. It restored 570,000 for Central Valley water supply study and a 264,000 report on the aqueduct bringing Delta water to Alameda and neighboring counties. Two Motorcycle Accidents Kill Three Men in South County

Three motorcyclists died in two separate crashes in Southern Alamede county reported by the California Highway Patrol. The incidents occurred between midnight and 6 03 am as two riders east on ML Eden Road lost control and collided with a fence and utility pole near Hayward. Robert Ly Smith, 29, of Vacaville, a Travis Air Force Base staff sergeant, was among the victims.

Arson attempt foiled at San Jose church in pre-dawn blaze

Highways patrol and firemen reported two pre-dawn fires at St Joseph’s Catholic church near San Jose. A motorcyclist, Donald Nadieros, 25, and Dominic Malcohol, 22, died when a southbound motorcycle struck a tractor-trailer on State Highway 17. Witnesses said the rider drifted over the double line on a curve. The incident raised Southern Alameda County’s accident toll to 38 for the day.

Navy Jet Crash Kills Pilot and Sparks Homes

A Navy jet crashed near a Minneapolis Saint Paul area air base after declaring trouble. The jet plowed into two houses, destroying them, and ignited a fire that injured several, with seven feared dead including a Marine pilot and one family reported missing. President Eisenhower underwent a major operation at Walter Reed Medical Center to relieve a nonmalignant intestinal obstruction. Letters Threaten Ike Man Arrested in Hartford

In Hartford Conn a jobless Massachusetts man was held on 34003 bond for sending threatening letters to President Eisenhower. Charles KR Moye of Chelsea Massachusetts admitted to mailing four letters threatening to “eliminate” Ike due to inability to obtain treatment at a veterans hospital. Secret Service Agent Robert Stings said Moye had the letters in his possession when arrested.
