Shasta Dam Floodgates to Lift for Centennial Display
Shasta Dam floodgates will be lifted for the first time during the Shasta Centennial celebration. The two five-minute tests occur during the dam dedication ceremonies on June 17 and the preceding fireworks display. George Heing of the California Centennials Commission announced the event, with cooperation from Shasta County volunteers. The spectacle features colored floodlights, rockets, and a rainbow cascade down the 467-foot spillway, drawing crowds for an eight-day celebration, Shasta Cavalcade, running June 14-18. The pageant highlights California history, with amateur performers from Redding and surrounding areas, coordinated by Phil Whiting and produced by George Heinz. The celebration theme is One Hundred Years of Shasta.

Valley Club Eyes Area For Park and Recreation
Everett Wright, president of the Castro Valley Improvement and Social club, urged support for converting land near Tanglewood drive in Baywood into a park with a quarry plan for later homes. The recreation district backs the idea in principle, noting lack of funds to buy land but support for a Castro Valley parks area. New members joined the club, and a dance program by the Valdez and Peggy School of Dance featured skating and black-light costumes.
