Burglar Suspected After Union City Grocery Fire

A Union City fire caused about 175000 in damage to F and B Market at 206 E St. Fire Chief Kenneth Garcia said two arson sites, in the warehouse and near the cash register, were found as flames were visible at 4:44 a.m. Neighbors saw the blaze, 15 firefighters fought for an hour, and entry appeared forced with the front door lock cut. Police suspect the fire was set to cover a burglary with cigarettes beer and meat reported missing. An investigation continued.

Police officer killed at blind Fremont intersection

A station wagon struck a patrol car at a blind Alameda Creek bridge intersection in Fremont, killing 11 year veteran David W. Jones. The 41 year old officer died as traffic backed up on Newark Boulevard. The driver was Terence W. Ruedel, 17, from Hayward, treated and released. a passenger Brenda F. Persinter, 15, of Newark, listed in fair condition.
