Close Race For Justice Peace Post In Alameda County

Tabulations from 68 of 206 precincts in Eden township show Lester Foley leading Frank Crews by about 10 votes, Foley 1,196 to Crews 1,126. Alameda County voters weighed county and state posts with tight races for judge of the peace and other offices as results trickle in.

Wind Storm Hits Village and Hayward Causing Damage

A storm with 30 to 35 mph winds and gusts to 60 mph struck the Wayward area and Hayward yesterday. In San Lorenzo Village about 300 sycamore trees were wind bent, with many branches torn from older trees. Crews topped trees to prevent future damage as homeowners cooperate with the San Lorenzo Village Homes Association. In Hayward, curved plate glass windows at Deterra motors and Lockerby Motors shattered, a sign at Yate’s dry cleaners folded, and telephone lines had minor faulting but no major outages. PG&E reported a blown pole in Bamberg and temporary outages, with crews clearing incidents by 1 pm. Local property damage included snapped clotheslines, broken windows, and damaged furniture as apricot and cherry trees suffered. A pedestrian narrowly escaped a traveling billboard blown off a sound truck near Paseo Grande and Via Arriba.

Warren 9-1 Victor on GOP Ticket

Warren led a Democratic sweep in California's primary as James Roosevelt claimed the Democratic nomination for governor while Warren won the Republican vote by a nine to one margin. Helen Gahagan Douglas captured the Democratic Senate nomination with Nixon leading on the Republican side. Howser was defeated in both parties. Roosevelt proclaimed victory late but then delayed final results.

The 1950 city population was 14 206, announced by Mayor Carey Branson and Alabama Census official Roger Anderson. The figure, preliminary and subject to final census checks, was about 1 11 percent higher than the 6 796 listed in 1940. A January 1 estimate by the chamber manager put Hayward near 14 100.

Propositions 1 and 3 Win in California Vote

San Francisco dispatch reports Proposition 1 won with a large margin as voters approved a statewide $10 million bond for farm and ham lonna Jo vols while Proposition 2 was rejected, and Proposition 3, allowing cities to pledge parking meter revenues for off street parking, appeared to prevail. Preliminary precinct tallies show Nos 1 and 3 ahead with substantial yes margins.

Roosevelt edged toward national prominence as California held its Democratic gubernatorial primary with Warren winning the GOP nomination. In South Dakota, Rep. Francis D. Dole unseated Sen. Ninety one war brides and family members arrived at Bovingdon, England aboard a Transocean airliner from Oakland after a 3000 mile journey.
