Hayward district moves to trim a $1.8 million deficit by eliminating busing for fourth through sixth graders while preserving routes for unsafe areas. Elementary class sizes rise to 33 and secondary to 38 as layoffs, maintenance cuts, and a reduced emergency reserve follow.
The Fremont school district faces a grim budget forecast with a 46.4 million proposed fiscal 1975 76 budget. Officials warned drastic cuts may be needed, likening the task to wielding an axe and buzzsaw to balance the books if state aid does not rise before August finalization.
Victoria Fyodorova daughter of Russian actress Zoya Fyodorova and retired Rear Adm. Jackson Tate plans to marry Pan American pilot Fred Polly. Tate says Fyodorova, born in Siberia, recently met her father for the first time and received an immigration extension as her visa nears expiration.
Four Weather Underground fugitives were seen posing as a TV news crew interviewing striking doctors at Martin Luther King Jr hospital in Los Angeles. Film crews including Oscar winner Haskel Wexler shot the interviews for a documentary while subpoenas loomed over the filmmakers. Hollywood figures planned to speak at a news conference as the grand jury probe continued.
Washington AP reports May unemployment at 9.2 percent, a postwar high, while total employment rose for a second straight month to 84.4 million. U.S. jobless total climbed to 8.5 million as 360,000 joined the unemployed, yet May retail sales surged, aided by weather and tax cuts. Analysts call the gains a positive sign for recovery.
Kathleen Laird, 21, named maid and Tracy Fassler crowned princess in Union City pageant sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Laird, a boutique worker, plans airline stewardess or fashion buyer career and enjoys water sports and dancing. Fassler, age 8, will be princess for a day in Fairyland event July 19 in Oakland after the crown by Mayor Tom Kitayama.
San Leandro chamber directors urged the city council to cut the property tax rate from 84 to 2 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, while maintaining current sales tax and proposing reductions in utility taxes for businesses. The group cites a balanced budget with projected revenues exceeding expenses by 10 percent, asks delaying equipment purchases, and warns wage hikes beyond inflation could hurt the budget and taxpayers.
