Freight rate hikes bite into Bay Area costs

The ICC approved rail rate increases likely raising consumer costs nationwide. Bay Area shipments from the West Coast and within California will rise pennies to dollars for appliances and cars, with an estimated 1.2 billion annual boost to railroads and a 4 percent cap. Western Pacific’s Dick McElheney cautioned large California shipments like canned goods and lumber may see smaller increases, while some local firms could hold prices due to competition. The changes take effect June 30, possibly lifting supermarket, coal, grain, newsprint and manufactured goods prices, and may push trucking costs higher too.
