Between Flood Work and Boston Accent Quips in San Leandro
The piece mixes local disruption from flood control work on Ashland Avenue with survey markings on the Kyte residence front porch. It travels through a comic aside about a Massachusetts reporter’s Boston pronunciation, a Hunt Foods miscaptioned rocket story, and a chaotic photo shoot for cherry trees. It closes with a look at San Leandro political progress in 1942 to 1956, noting write‑in campaigns and party shifts.

Castro Valley Trustees wrestle with two 1956 57 budgets
Castro Valley Elementary School district trustees studied two preliminary 1956 57 budgets. One relies on a 50 cent tax ceiling increase to 1.90. The smaller budget, 1,324,539, would cut costs on the bone and lower teacher pupil ratios, delaying salary increases and trimming administrative and support staff. If the tax increase passes, restorations to cuts could occur.
