Projects Bring Spark of Light to Slum Dwellers
Across the nation a wave of Negro self help projects emerges in corporate form aimed at slum improvement. In New York a Harlem Co op plans six stores with patronage refunds, led by Cora T. Walker. Philadelphia hosts OIC job training and a first Negro owned shopping center. Los Angeles Watts groups build a credit union and a baseball bat venture. Boston, Newark, Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis and other cities report similar efforts to finance, educate, and expand black-owned businesses and housing, with community-led boards and private funding guiding growth.
