The Daily Review invites entries for a Father of the Year contest with 15 categories such as most unique job most children and most travelled. Submit a five line entry and a 100 word explanation, then have a photo taken by Fairchild Studios. Deadline is June 13.
Belgrade reports Western envoys see the Tito Bulganin declaration as a cautious compromise. Khrushchev and Bulganin leave Belgrade for Sofia amid cautious Western interpretation. The pact aims to reassure satellites without joining Russia's blocs while pledging non interference and equal state relations.
The California Assembly gave final approval to a bill allowing the State Reclamation Board to build its substitute flood control plan for the upper San Joaquin river. The measure by Sen. Irvington, Calif. 60-year-old Santa Cruz motel operator Clara Maud Wells was to be arraigned on suspicion of manslaughter after a student pedestrian accident near State Highway 17. A 6-year-old Irvington kindergartner, Roger D. Aymond, was fatally struck as he walked home from school. Wells claimed the car skidded on gravel while passing a slow truck, losing control and hitting the boy. He was dragged about 20 feet and then thrown into a drainage ditch. Wells was arrested and held at Santa Rita prison farm.
Barbara Graham, 32, was executed in the San Quentin gas chamber after a frantic sequence delaying the sentence twice. Dressed for travel, she entered with guards and a Catholic chaplain, then received lethal cyanide pellets and was pronounced dead at 2:42. The murder involved a wealthy Burbank widow and two accomplices.

The Hayward Strip sale to Lily Swales Waidman of Atherton was disclosed this morning after Alameda records showed $1,150,000 paid for a five store section center strip developed by MacDonald Products. Leases were assigned to the new owner. MacDonald firm retains several buildings and large northwest holdings along Foothill Boulevard with further tenant announcements planned.
