Forgotten Vows and the Illusion of a Perfect World
Hal Boyle argues that people forget promises they make to themselves, causing the hoped for better world after New Year to falter. He recalls lofty self-improvement aims in January, noting most failed to follow through and leaving society unchanged and self-contradictory.

Aged Woman and Daughter Found Dead in San Jose Apartment
In San Jose an elderly woman and her 46 year old daughter were found dead in their apartment, apparently from malnutrition. Deputy Coroner Don Bouchette noted the 84 year old Abs Elizabeth Farley and her daughter weighed about 70 pounds each, with the daughter dead six to eight days and the mother four to five days. The deaths were discovered when the owner’s son, Richard Griffith, entered the unit after not seeing them for several days. The apartment contained two railroad retirement checks and was well kept, and the women had lived frugal lives since moving from Oneida, New York a year earlier after the husband’s death.
