The Board of Supervisors approved 1.8 million in salary increases for about 4800 county employees effective July 1, averaging 25 to 14 dollars per month. The vote was unanimous aside from two supervisors opposing 10 percent boosts for 20 department heads. The board also imposed a freeze on new and vacant positions to review necessity and staffing levels.
In San Francisco 62 students had charges dismissed after a disturbance at a House Committee on Un American Activities hearing. Judge Albert Axelrod cited justice and the students right to protest while noting most defendants were students and that the police reports might have supported convictions. A few defendants, including Ralph Williams and Robert Meizenbach, faced possible trial as of the decision.

Washington AP reports Western Union reached a contract agreement with the Commercial Telegraphers Union after the old pact expired. Negotiators expected signing on Thursday once paperwork is complete, with a wage rise of 10 cents an hour effective June and a five cent increase the following January.
San Pablo authorities issued warrants for Glen R. Deavours and Robert A. Davis both 22 of Hayward on two counts of grand theft in a $50,000 burglary ring. Bail set at $25,000. Also in custody Gregory L. Deuser 18 and Rodney Angel 20 while five associates are sought in the motor thefts at Hayward Bay Boat Center last August. Further arrests expected as investigation continues by Sheriff’s Department Hayward and San Pablo authorities.
A collision near Oakland Naval Hospital delayed Mrs. June Patrick 20 of Vallejo and her husband Carl 20. Mrs Patrick gave birth to a girl five minutes after arrival. The car struck a Key System bus ten blocks from the hospital. Bus driver Leroy Broadman 43 sustained a forehead cut. Kevin Patrick, 18 months, suffered facial cuts. Mrs Patrick and the baby escaped injury.

The White House announced today that Vice Admiral John H. Sides will become commander in chief of the Pacific Fleet upon Admiral Herbert G. Hopwood's retirement September 1. President Eisenhower sent the nominations of Sides to the rank of admiral while in command of the fleet, and the designation of Howard is the rank of admiral on the revised list.

Negotiations between the Keysystem company the Carmen's Union and state conciliators stalled this morning as the union seeks a 3 1057 years an hour wage rise for about 1 100 drivers dispatchers and clerical workers. The company offers an across the board raise of 8 cents an hour. If no settlement is reached today buses may continue on a day to day basis unless a strike is called by union officials after contract expiration.
