Chowchilla kidnappers plead guilty in dramatic case
In Alameda and Madera counties three men Frederick Woods James Schoenfeld and Richard Schoenfeld pleaded guilty to kidnapping charges in the Chowchilla school bus abduction. The defendants admitted no bodily harm charges though the plea opens the path to sentences of five years to life for kidnapping with a potential life term for a bodily harm conviction. The case stemmed from the 1976 escape of 26 people including 25 children aged 5 to 14 and driver Ed Ray after being buried in a truck in Livermore.
