Nine Injured In Weekend Auto Crashes
Nine people were injured, one seriously, in weekend auto accidents in southern Alameda County. Homer L. Belvin, 20, a sailor aboard the USS Guadalupe, suffered major injuries on the Livermore road when a tire blew out, causing the car to overturn and flip into a field. Sherran Russell, 6, San Lorenzo, was not seriously hurt after stepping in front of a car on Route 21. A driver, Nicholas Jarate, was not hurt. Mrs. George Watson sustained injuries when her husband’s car went out of control on Washington Boulevard. a truck struck it. Alice M. Sterren, 24 months, fell from her father’s car on Route 21. Several residents near Dublin were lightly injured in a walliston on Highway 60. John E. Jones, Pleasanton, received minor injuries when his car went off Highway 40 one mile east of Eden Canyon Road.

Youngster Dies After Taking Pills
Nancy Neilson, 18 months old, granddaughter of Palmer Peterson, died at Maynard hospital after ingesting pills found in her grandmother's purse during a visit to Haywan. Me. and Mrs. Burton M. Neilson of Oakland were at the Petersons' home when the child swallowed the pills. Police say parents checked on her at 4 pm and saw her with pills. a doctor was summoned, treated her with injections, gastric pumping, and oxygen, but she died at 6 pm. The body was taken to Sorensen Brothers mortuary in Haywan.

Retirement tribute to James L. Bunker longtime Alameda educator
James L. Bunker Administrative assistant to the Alameda county schools superintendent retires after 48 years in teaching. Born 1882 in Michigan he taught in Placer County before moving to Alameda County in 1912 to lead Newark and then Niles schools. He later joined the county superintendent staff and will devote retirement to watching educational trends while his family, including son James G.
